Until the discovery of a small number of higher grade pieces in the S.S. Republic, the 1862-S double eagle was essentially unavailable in Uncirculated. It is still a rare coin in MInt State with likely no more than 20-30 accounted for and almost none exist above MS60 to MS61.
This bright, frosty piece is likely from a shipwreck, given its surface texture and appearance. It is a strictly “new” coin with no wear and only minor handling marks seen in the fields. The strike is typical for the date with some weakness at the centers but the obverse stars show full radial lines.
Three PCGS MS61 examples crossed the auction block in 2014 and these coins sold for $18,800, $17,625 and $21,150 respectively.
With only nine graded higher than this at PCGS, this represents an opportunity for the Type One collector or the Civil War specialist to acquire one of the best available 1862-S $20.00′s.
