The 1859-S is probably the single worst produced Type One double eagle, along with the 1866-S No Motto. Most 1859-S double eagles are seen with a very weak strike which is sometimes confused with wear. For some reason, this non-shipwreck date is especially hard to find with natural color and choice surfaces.

This totally original example shows a good deal of luster beneath rich even orange-gold color. There is enough luster, in act, to suggest a higher grade, but the edges show typical weakness of strike and there is not a lot of hair detail on the obverse. The fields are choice for the issue with only light, minor scuffs visible.

No PCGS AU53′s have sold at auction since February 2012. The only NGC AU53′s to sell in the last year, both with the rare doubled LIBERTY obverse, brought $4,847 and $6,463, respectively.

CAC has approved seven in this grade with 29 finer.
