All of the 1854-1858 Philadelphia double eagles are scarce in properly graded AU58 and rare in Uncirculated. The 1858 is probably the most often seen in AU58 but most of the coins graded as such by PCGS and NGC are either bright from dipping or abundantly bagmarked.
It is likely that this gem “slider” never saw circulation but there is some light bag friction on the cheek of Liberty. Still, this piece is superior to most 1858 double eagles which I have seen in MS60 and MS61 holders. The luster is virtually full and the color, a lovely orange-gold and greenish shade, is correct for the date. The razor sharp strike and relatively choice surfaces give this coin tremendous eye appeal and it is safe to say that there are not many 1858 double eagles in this grade which compare to the present coin.
Unless you have deep pockets and can spend the $15,000 or so it will require to buy a PCGS/CAC MS61 example of this date (if you can even find one…) this piece will be an excellent alternative…at a third of the price!
CAC has approved just three 1858 double eagles in this grade with a single coin (MS63) finer.
