While not as scarce overall as the 1855 and 1856 Philadelphia double eagles, the 1858 is a hard issue to locate in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and it is very rare in Uncirculated.
This lightly worn slider is removed from a full AU58 grade by the presence of some scuffing in the obverse fields. It is nearly fully lustrous and very well detailed with attractive light yellow-gold color. The detail is excellent with an above-average strike for the date. The overall eye appeal is excellent and I could see this coin in a 58 holder someday.
A total of four AU55 examples of this date were auctioned in 2014, all in NGC holders. The last of these, ex Heritage 9/11: 4471, realized $3,819 and it was far inferior to this coin. An NGC AU58 sold for $5,170 in Great Collection’s 7/14 sale.
This is the only AU55+ 1858 double eagle slabbed by NGC.
