The 1845-D is among the more available half eagles from this mint. It is usually seen in the EF40 to AU50 grade range and properly graded AU55 to AU58 coins are becoming harder and harder to locate. In Uncirculated, this is a rare and expensive issue.

The bright, lustrous “slider” has the same amount of luster that you typically see on coins graded MS61 and even sometimes those graded MS62. There is some minor friction on the high spots and minor luster breaks in the fields which suggest handling and not necessarily actual wear. The color is a pleasing light orange-gold with the obverse slightly deeper in hue than the reverse. There are some very small grease stans on the obverse above the date and in the lower right field; the reverse shows a shallow mint-made flake above the tip of the highest arrow.

The last PCGS AU58 example of this date to sell at auction was Heritage 7/12: 4858, which brought $5,463.

A great higher grade type coin for the collector seeking a single high quality half eagle from this mint.
