RARE 1842 LARGE LETTERS HALF EAGLE
This is the single scarcest pre-Civil War half eagle from the Philadelphia mint and as few as 50-60 are known in all grades. The Small Letters variety of this year is the next rarest.
This is a sharp and pleasing example with even russet color seen on both the obverse and the reverse.
The only PCGS EF40 to sell at auction in well over a decade brought $2,183 as Heritage 10/08: 2083.
If this were a Charlotte or Dahlonega half eagle in this grade with this degree of rarity, it would fetch a five-figure price.
