SUPERB CHOICE UNCIRCULATED 1839 HALF EAGLE
The 1839 is numismatically significant as both a one-year type and a first-year-of-issue within the Liberty Head half eagle series. It is relatively available in circulated grades but it is quite rare in Uncirculated with fewer than dozen known, mostly in the MS60 to MS61 range. This exact coin is likely the third finest known, trailing a superb OGH PCGS MS64 which sold for $80,500 as Heritage 2006 ANA: 5498 and another PCGS MS64 which realized $41,125 as Heritage 2014 FUN: 5441.
This is a superb and ultra high end example with remarkable mint frost seen beneath crisp, original medium orange-gold color. If resubmitted to PCGS, it could likely garner a plus grade as it is clearly finer than any other MS63 1839 half eagle I have seen and just a few ticks shy of a full MS64 grade. The eye appeal is literally off the charts and this is a legitimately beautiful coin.
Another PCGS MS63 which was not nearly as choice as this coin and which didn’t have CAC approval sold for $25,300 as Heritage 1/11: 5106.
Am important coin which will appeal to both the Liberty Head half eagle specialist and the type collector.
CAC has approved two in this grade with one finer (64).
