Small Date.
The 1837 is the second scarcest Classic Head half eagle from the Philadelphia mint after the 1834 Crosslet 4. It is quite scarce in the higher AU grades and deserves to sell for a strong premium over dates such as the 1834 Plain 4, 1835 and 1836.
This frosty light yellow gold example shows minimal wear and uncommonly sharp detail at the centers. The surfaces show scattered light marks in the field from handling but the eye appeal is excellent and this is an undipped and really pleasing piece.
A PCGS/CAC AU58 brought $4,113 as Heritage 1/14: 6620.
An interesting alternative to a common date for the type collector who wants a high quality but affordable Classic Head half eagle.
