The 1836 is a slightly scarcer date in the Classic Head series, which is far less available than the common 1834 Plain 4. It is not easy to locate in properly graded AU58, especially with choice surfaces and natural coloration.
This gem slider shows lovely deep original green-gold color over very clean surfaces. The strike is typical for the issue with some weakness at the centers while there is some luster seen in the recesses and protected areas.
No CAC approved AU58 1836 half eagle has sold at auction for sometime. The last nice NGC AU58, not approved by CAC, realized $2,350 as Heritage 6/14: 5689 while a PCGS AU58, also without CAC approval, brought $2,468 as Stacks Bowers 2014 ANA: 11096.
An excellent 1836 half eagle for the date collector or the type collector who is seeking a single high quality but affordable example for a set.
CAC has approved 14 with eight finer.
