The supply of nice AU55 to AU58 early half eagles can not keep up with the demand and I have noticed nice examples in this grade range to be in unusually short supply in 2016.The 1803/2 is, in theory, a common date in PCGS AU58 but what was the last time you saw one for sale?
This late die state example shows very little actual wear and is well detailed for the date and variety. Both sides show a good amount of luster beneath splashes of rich natural green-gold color and the surfaces are clean save for a few ticks in the obverse fields and two or three faint vertical adjustment marks on the portrait.
The last PCGS AU58 1803/2 half eagle to sell at auction brought $12,000 as Stacks Bowers 3/16: 13179; it was CAC approved. Prior to this, Stacks Bowers also sold a non-CAC 1803/2 half eagle in PCGS AU58 for $12,925.
This is the first PCGS AU58 Capped Bust Right half eagle I’ve offered in a few months and it should sell quickly.
