There are probably less than 100 examples known of the 1875-S half eagle from an original mintage of just 9,000 coins. For many years, coins like this have been overlooked and undervalued but one of the new trends that I have noted in the branch mint gold market in the last two or three years is a new-found interest in formerly hard-to-sell coins such as this. The present example is a full AU55 to AU58 that has been net graded by PCGS due to a small cut in the left obverse field opposite the second star. The surfaces are otherwise far above-average for the date and grade with nice natural rose-gold color, good detail and a considerable amount of luster. The last PCGS AU53 to sell at auction was back in June 2003 and only two have been offered since 1997.
This is the only 1875-S half eagle in AU53 to have been approved by CAC and only finer, an AU55, has been approved.
