The low mintage 1859-D is tied for the tenth rarest of 26 half eagles from Dahlonega but it is slightly more available in higher grades than one might expect. That said, nice AU examples in PCGS holders aren’t offered for sale with regularity.
This bright, lustrous example has enough “body” to grade AU58 but there are a few light marks in the right obverse field and a small mint-made planchet depression hidden at the tip of the eagle’s right wing. This coin faces up very well with excellent mint luster and good overall detail.
A total of four AU55′s have sold at auction since 2009. Two NGC coins brought $4,553 and $4,600 while two PCGS coins went for $4,025 and $4,888.
This is just about the best available quality for this date at less than $5,000.
