The 1857-S is one of the two most available No Motto San Francisco half eagles (along with the 1856-S) but it is very scarce in properly graded AU58 and rare in Uncirculated.
This fully natural example shows nice medium green colors on both side. There is a good amount of underlying luster and the surfaces lack the pronounced abrasions often seen on this date. A small pit on the base of the neck appears to be mint-made in origin.
The only AU58 with CAC approval to sell at auction was the NGC graded example which sold for $3,450 as Heritage 9/10: 5349. Since this time, the level of demand for nice San Francisco half eagles (and eagles) has increased dramatically.
With Uncirculated examples of this date nearly impossible to locate, this choice AU58 represents just about the best available quality for the issue.
CAC has approved three examples in this grade with none finer.
