HISTORIC 1856-S HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Large S variety.

Struck during the early years of operations at the San Francisco mint, the 1856-S half eagle is available in the lower to mid AU range but it is scarce in AU58 and quite rare in Uncirculated. Most pieces graded AU55 by both services have been stripped and many show artificial color. Examples which are natural and choice are scarcer than most collectors realize.

This well-detailed example shows considerable mint luster below attractive natural orange-gold color. A grade of AU58 for this coin would not be out of the question as there is limited wear and the eye appeal is excellent.

The only APR for a CAC approved 1856-S half eagle in AU55 is Heritage 9/11: 4312 which realized $1,783; the coin was not very choice in my opinion.

Early date San Francisco half eagles are not seldom offered with this coin’s combination of quality and affordability.

CAC has approved eight in this grade with four finer.
