THE FIRST COLLECTIBLE SAN FRANCISCO HALF EAGLE
With the 1854-S essentially unobtainable, the 1855-S is the first collectible half eagle from the new San Francisco mint. While 61,000 were made, most were melted after long sojourns in commerce and today an estimated 125-175 re known, mostly in the EF40 to AU50 range.
Tis attractive example shows moderate russet color with soft rose accents and it is lustrous fro the grade. Some old ticks can be seen in the obverse fields but there are no deep or obtrusive marks. For the grade, this is a choice piece.
No CAC approved AU50 1855-S half eagle has ever sold at auction.
An affordable example of a scarce Gold Rush issue.
CAC has approved one in this grade with nine finer.
