The 1854-O is the second most available No Motto half eagle from this mint after the 1844-O. It is seen from time to time in the higher AU grades but it is still considerably harder to locate than the 1844-O and I feel it is much undervalued.
This light green-gold example has some remaining luster and it shows splashes of orange-gold color at the rims. The strike is sharp while the surfaces show just a few small ticks in the left obverse field.
The only PCGS AU53 1854-O half eagle to sell in any years was ex Great Collections 6/13 where it realized $1,155; this coin wasn’t stickered by CAC.
A pleasing, affordable No Motto half eagle from the New Orleans mint and very good value.
CAC has approved three in this grade with four finer.
