RARE KEY DATE 1847-O HALF EAGLE
The 1847-O is the rarest half eagle produced by the New Orleans mint. There are likely not more than 50-60 known with most in the VF-EF range. Eye appeal is a problem with this date and I can count on two hands the number of truly choice, collector-quality pieces. Most have been cleaned and many were struck on problematical planchets. Choice pieces are in great demand.
This piece is extensively worn but it has an excellent overall appearance with natural medium green-gold color over choice, lightly abraded surfaces. I actually think this piece should grade VF30 as it has good feather and hair detail and it is so original in appearance that it should “push” the grade up a few points.
No PCGS VF25 example of this date has sold at auction since 2000 A nice NGC VF25 with CAC approval brought $4,406 as Heritage 6/13: 5707.
It is almost impossible to find an 1847-O which is attractive for any price, let alone one in the mid-four figures. A great coin for the New Orleans half eagle specialist.
CAC has approved two in this grade with six finer.
