The 1847-D is a common date in the Dahlonega half eagle series but it is a true appearance rarity which is almost never seen with natural color and choice surfaces. A really nice AU55 to AU58 example is worth a hefty premium over the typical processed piece.
This deep green-gold example has an unusual but totally original grainy appearance and it is one of the neatest looking 1847-D half eagles I can recall having seen. It is sharply defined and very lightly abraded with excellent surfaces and a really neat appearance.
Only three AU55′s have appeared at auction in the last three years. A very attractive but non-CAC NGC piece recently brought $3,995 as Heritage 2/15: 4220 while an unappealing PCGS AU55 sold for $3,819 as Heritage 2/14: 5282.
The sophisticated collector of Dahlonega half eagles will appreciate the look of this wonderful 1847-D half eagle.
CAC has approved two in this grade with four finer.
