The 1847-C is generally regarded as a common date but it is actually more difficult to locate than such issues as the 1849-C, 1850-C and 1852-C. It is scarce in properly graded AU53 to AU55 and not often seen choicer than this.
This is a choice piece which would grade at least AU55 were it not for a long, thin obverse scrape which begins at the back tip of the neck and runs into the right obverse field. There is a considerable amount of remaining luster and the color is a pleasing natural medium yellowish and orange-gold.
Only two PCGS AU53 1847-C half eagles have sold at auction in the last decade and one, a nice non-CAC piece, realized $3,508 as Bowers and Merena 2/10: 3755.
This is the best available quality for this date at under $4,000 and it would work for the date collector or for a type set.
CAC has approved one in this grade with seven finer.
