Along with the 1895-S, this is one of the true condition rarities in the late date San Francisco half eagle series. It is seen most often in the AU grades and can be found from time to to time in MS60 but properly graded MS61 and higher examples are very scarce.
This attractive, fresh example shows rich natural orange-gold color over lustrous, lightly marked surfaces. A few light scuffs in the fields preclude a higher grade but this piece is “new” with no noticeable friction on the relief details or luster breaks.
The last APR for an MS61 was Stacks Bowers 10/10: 5148, graded by PCGS, at a very strong $4,313. Only five MS61′s, in total, have sold at auction since the beginning of 2005.
As with many of the later date half eagles and eagles from this mint, this is an undervalued issue.
This is the only Uncirculated 1894-S half eagle to have been approved by CAC.
