This is a numismatically significant issue as the final half eagle from the Carson City mint. The 1893-CC is moderately scarce in MS62, scarce in MS63 and rare above this.
This is a fresh, wholesome example with natural rose and orange color atop lightly abraded surfaces. There are no deep marks and this is unusual as the 1893-CC is an issue which was not carefully handled and most show severe abrasions.
The last APR for an NGC MS62 is Heritage 2/13: 4887 which sold for $4,113 and was a non-CAC coin. Another NGC MS62, also non-CAC, brought $5,141 in Heritage’s 11/12 auction.
A CAC MS63 example of this date, if available, would cost in the $6,000-7,000 range and would probably not be significantly finer than the present piece from an aesthetic point of view.
CAC has approved five in this grade with none finer.
