The 1850-O is a scarcer date in the No Motto Liberty Head eagle series and it compares favorably to such New Orleans issues as the 1842-O, 1846-O and 1856-O. It is not often seen above AU50 to AU53 and rarely with natural color and choice surfaces.
This moderately abraded example shows nice medium lemon-gold color with an attractive contrasting band of peripheral reddish color on the obverse. There is a decent amount of luster for the grade and good overall detail for the date. A small, somewhat noticeable mark rests atop the 50 and a few scuffs can be seen in the obverse fields.
A non-CAC NGC EF45 example of this date sold for $2,233 as Heritage 1/14: 6854. An NGC EF45 with CAC approval realized $1,960 in DLRC’s 12/13 sale.
CAC has approved five in this grade with five finer.
