The 1846-O eagle is a coin that is seen most often in VF-EF grades and almost never with natural color and choice surfaces. In fact, it is one of the more difficult No Motto eagles from New Orleans to locate with above-average eye appeal.

This fresh-to-the-market example was recently found in Europe and it displays very pleasing natural medium green-gold color with some contrasting hues on the devices. The surfaces are abraded, as usual for the date, but none are deep or detracting. Some luster can be seen in the protected areas and this coin has great eye appeal for the date and grade.

Only one PCGS EF45 has sold since 2005 and it realized $2,530 as Stacks Bowers 8/10: 1098.

I have handled nearly every higher grade 1846-O and 1846/”5″-O eagles known and this is certainly one of the more cosmetically appealing.

CAC has approved just two in EF45 with only one finer (AU50).
