The 1884 is easily the rarest of the late date (1879-1889) gold dollars and it is a scarce coin in properly graded MS67, despite selling for a small premium over a relatively common issue such as the 1889.
This semi-prooflike example is an unusual die state with significant obverse clashmarks seen in both fields. The surfaces are very clean and covered with light natural orange-gold color.
Heritage 6/14: 4353, graded MS67 and approved by CAC, sold for $4,406.
I just sold a PCGS MS68+ CAC example of this date and took this Gem in trade from the single finest collection of PCGS graded gold dollars ever assembled.
CAC has approved nine in this grade with only two finer.
