This popular Civil War issue is the single rarest gold dollar from the Philadelphia, scarcer in terms of its overall rarity than even the popular low mintage 1875. Fewer than 100 1863 gold dollars are known with the finest being an amazing PCGS MS68 in the Duckor collection.

This borderline Gem is original and frosty with rich natural yellow-gold color. There are a few light scuffs in the left obverse field which limit the grade while the reverse is a full-blown Gem. The overall appearance of this coin is outstanding.

Only two PCGS MS64′s have sold at auction since May 2004. An NGC MS64 realized $12,650 in Stacks Bowers’ 2011 ANA auction.

With the increase in popularity in choice and rare Civil War gold coins, the importance of this borderline Gem 1863 has increased as well.
