Only five Type Three gold dollars were made at the San Francisco mint. Of these, the 1860-S is the most available in Uncirculated with around three dozen known. Most are in the MS60 to MS62 range and properly graded MS63′s are rare. The finest known is the PCGS/CAC MS65 in the Duckor collection which I handled a few years ago when I sold the Vasquez Rocks gold dollar collection.
This choice, satiny example is well detailed and it shows a splash of deep golden color at the upper obverse and another similar splash at the right reverse. A few small ticks in the left obverse field remove this from strong consideration at a higher grade level.
The last PCGS MS63 to sell at auction was Heritage 3/08: 1352 which realized $5,319. NO MS63 with CAC approval has ever been auctioned.
CAC has approved four in this grade with only ne finer (MS65).
