Along with the 1859-D, this is the most available Type Three gold dollar from this mint. It is usually seen in EF40 to AU53 grades but it is hard to locate a choice example with natural color and surfaces.
This medium green-gold example is perfect for the grade with pleasing surfaces and even wear. The obverse is well detailed for the issue except for the U in UNITED which is hard to see; the reverse is weak at the 85 in the date.
A non-CAC PCGS EF45 example just sold for $1,998 as Heritage 7/14: 4462.
This is the only 1858-D gold dollar in this grade to have been approved by CAC and it would be an excellent type coin for the collector who wants an affordable but special Type Three dollar from this mint.
CAC has approved only one in EF45 with four finer.
