The 1857-S is numismatically significant as the first Type Three gold dollar struck at the San Francisco mint. Of the 10,000 struck, around 125-150 are known with most in the EF45-AU53 range. Properly graded AU58 examples are very scarce and it is unlikely that more than 8-10 exist in Uncirculated.

The very lustrous slider example has the naked-eye appearance of an MS61 and there is less friction on the high spots than on coins that I have seen in Uncirculated holders. The color is a pleasing light yellow-gold and the strike is sharp except for the C in AMERICA which is weak, as made, due to die filling. A small dig on the obverse below the A in STATES is not detracting.

A PCGS AU58 with CAC approval sold for $3,055 as Heritage 8/12: 3055.

I have long been fond of the Type Three San Francisco gold dollars and in comparison to Charlotte and Dahlonega issues of this era they remain extremely undervalued.

CAC has approved five in this grade with only two finer (both MS61).
