The 1850-D remains the “sleeper” issue among the six Type One gold dollars produced at the Dahlonega mint. While sometimes seen in AU grades, very few exist with natural color and choice surfaces.
This very conservatively graded example is clearly superior to other 1850-D dollars I have seen in AU55 holders. It is well struck and lustrous with nice natural green-gold color which tends a bit towards orange-gold on the reverse. There are a few clashmarks seen in the fields but very few marks are noted and the overall eye appeal is simply outstanding for the date and grade.
Only three PCGS AU53s have sold at auction since 2006 and none have been approved by CAC. An NGC AU53 with splotchy color brought $3,290 as Heritage 8/12: 4380.
This fresh-to-the-market 1850-D is among the best examples of this date that I have handled in the last few years.
CAC has approved two in this grade with four finer.
