The 1849-O is numismatically significant as the first gold dollar from New Orleans and it is one of just five Type One issues from this mint. It is common in circulated grades and reasonably easy to locate in the lowest Uncirculated grades but it becomes scarce in properly graded MS63 and it is rare finer than this. There are just a handful of Gems known and the last of these to sell was ex Heritage 10/11: 4599 which brought $29,900.
This choice, original example is notable for its rich natural reddish-gold and orange hues on both sides. It is frosty and very well struck with a full date and mintmark. There are a few minor scuffs in the left obverse field which preclude a higher grade. They eye appeal is excellent for the date and grade.
There have been just three PCGS MS63 examples of this date to sell at auction in the last four years. The last was B+M 8/10: 1429 which sold reasonably at $2,993.
A nice example of the first gold dollar from the New Orleans mint.
