It is believed that around 300 Proof Sets were made for collectors in 1858. Some were melted after going unsold and today an estimated 80-100 exist.
This superbly toned example shows a rich lilac central obverse framed by a ring of deep green and blue; the reverse is a deeper blend of blues and greens with a small toning spot at the 5:00 rim. A few light lines in the right obverse field narrowly preclude a higher grade and this coin has a naked eye Gem appearance.
For most collectors, this is one of the more affordable pre-Civil War silver proofs that they can realistically buy and I think Proof 1858 dimes are very undervalued given their rarity.
CAC has approved three in this grade with nine finer; this doesn’t take into account Cameo and Deep Cameo designations.
