The low mintage 1848-P quarter eagle is much scarcer than its Charlotte and Dahlonega counterparts and is actually offered for sale with around the same frequency as the famous 1848 CAL. This issue is very scarce in properly graded AU58 and it is rare in Mint State with fewer than ten known, mostly in the MS60 to MS61 range.

This pleasing, lightly worn example shows a hard, frosty texture with nice light green-gold color. The surfaces are uncommonly clean for this issue with the only mark of note being a tiny tick below the base of the 4 in the date. The eye appeal is superior for the date and grade.

Only two AU58 1848 quarter eagles have sold in the last five years; both were slabbed by NGC and neither were approved by CAC. Each coin sold for $3,220.

I have only handled one other CAC approved AU58 example of this date. A rare, undervalued issue as are many Philadelphia quarter eagles from this era.

CAC has approved three in this grade with none finer.
