LOVELY CHOICE AU58 1847-D QUARTER EAGLE

Variety 9-N.

For some reason, there are more 1847-D quarter eagles with really nice original color than any other quarter eagle from this mint. However, a number of these coins have, sadly, been dipped while others are off the market in tightly-held collections. Today, there are not nearly enough nice pieces left to keep up with the increased demand.

I have sold this coin four different times over the last two and a half decades and every time I see it, a smile crosses my face. The obverse and reverse show almost no actual wear (just cabinet friction) and are covered with deep natural golden-orange and greenish hues. The strike is very sharp and with the exception of a shallow scrape near star eleven, the surfaces are clean and choice. The eye appeal exceeds coins I have seen in MS61 and MS62 holders.

Stacks Bowers 2015 ANA, graded AU58 by PCGS but not approved by CAC, sold for $4,994. Heritage 2013 FUN, graded AU58 by NGC and approved by CAC, brought $5,875.

If available, an Uncirculated 1847-D quarter eagle would cost in excess of $10,000 and likely would not have the eye appeal which the present coin possesses.

CAC has approved 11 in this grade with one finer.
