This is among the more available Dahlonega quarter eagles in circulated grades with over 200 pieces known. As with all Dahlonega quarter eagles, truly “new” coins are quite rare and I doubt if more than 15 or so exist in Uncirculated with most in the MS60 to MS62 range.
This coin has a very fresh appearance with frosty luster and lovely greenish-gold color which is contrasted by some orange-gold at the rims. If it were not for a few marks at the central obverse, this coin would clearly grade MS62. Unlike some 1844-D quarter eagles the strike is sharp with no weakness at the centers, making this piece desirable for the issue.
No PCGS MS61 example of the 1844-D quarter eagle has sold at auction since Bass III: 122 realized $12,075 all the way back in May 2000.
CAC has approved two in this grade with just one finer (MS62).
