Large Date variety; designated on the holder by PCGS.

Two varieties of 1843-O quarter eagle exist. The Large Date is by far the scarcer and it is actually one of the harder quarter eagles from this mint to locate, especially in higher grades. There are an estimated dozen or so known in Uncirculated with nearly all of these in the MS60 to MS62 range.

This rich yellow-gold example has lovely natural color and its excellent luster and clean surfaces give it an appearance suggestive of a higher grade. It is typically a bit softly struck at the centers but the overall detail is better than average.

The most recent APR for a PCGS/CAC MS61 1843-O Large Date quarter eagle is $8,225 for Heritage 6/13: 4713; that coin had some scratches in the right obverse field.

If you collect New Orleans quarter eagles, you are well aware of the importance of this offering.

CAC has approved five in this grade with five finer; these figures appear inflated by resubmissions.

Ex HA 10/11: 4654, where it sold for $9,200, a record price for this date in this grade.
