The 1840-C is numismatically significant as the first Charlotte quarter eagle struck with the new Liberty Head design. This is a scarcer issue in the series and one which is extremely scarce with natural color, choice surfaces and a bold strike.

This is one of the more wholesome and eye appealing circulated examples of this date that I have offered. It is struck in deep green-gold and shows extensive amounts of rich reddish-gold toning on both the obverse and reverse. The detail is excellent and there is enough “meat” on this coin to suggest an AU55 grade. PCGS was conservative, I would guess, due to some old marks in the obverse fields.

The last PCGS AU50 1840-C quarter eagle to sell at auction was a non-CAC piece that realized $3,525 as Heritage 11/12: 4739. Only five have sold at auction since the beginning of 2008 and none of these have had CAC approval.

A great piece for the date collector of Charlotte quarter eagles.

CAC has approved two in this grade with six finer.
