The 1897-O is available in MS60 to MS61 and it is sometimes seen in MS62. But this date is very scarce in MS63 and above and it is very hard to locate with natural color and choice surfaces.
This semi-prooflike example is choice and original with nice light orange-gold color which deepens towards the edges. There are a few ticks in the fields but the surfaces are cleaner than on other 1897-O eagles that I have seen and owned in MS63 holders. The strike is very sharp for the issue and this piece has very good overall eye appeal.
This is the only MS62+ example graded by PCGS and, obviously, it is the only piece with CAC approval. A “normal” PCGS MS62 with CAC approval is worth around $2,250-2,500. A PCGS MS63 with CAC approval realized $6,169 in the Heritage 3/13 sale.
CAC has approved this one coin in MS62+ with only three finer.
