The 1878-S is the last of the “interesting” ten dollar gold piece from this mint and many San Francisco collectors stop their sets at this year. It is common in in the VF-EF grades but it is scarce in the lower AU grades and very scarce to rare in properly graded AU55 to AU58. In Uncirculated, this date is likely unique (a PCGS MS64 which last sold for $30,415 in the 7/04 Heritage auction).
This semi-prooflike slider shows little actual wear and it displays warm natural yellow-gold and medium orange color. There are a few scattered ticks in the fields but the surfaces are choice for the issue.
The last PCGS AU58 to sell at auction realized $4,025 as Heritage 2012 FUN: 6522. An NGC AU58 with CAC approval sold for $5,288 in Legend’s 2/14 auction.
Seemingly excellent value for less than $5,000 given the fact that the current PCGS population is only six in this grade with one finer!
