The 1876-S is the last of the rare With Motto eagles from the San Francisco mint. Only 5,000 were made which is the second lowest production figure for this denomination/mint after the 1864-S. Of the 60-70 known, most grade VF-EF and properly graded AU coins are rare. I have never seen an 1876-S eagle which grades Mint State and only two or three with claims to the AU55 range.

This light yellow-gold example has very clean surfaces for this typically baggy issue. A small squiggly line at star nine appears to be a mint-made lintmark and there are just a few old abrasions in the left field. The strike is sharp and the appearance is above-average for the grade.

An NGC AU50 without CAC approval sold for $7,638 as Heritage 4/14: 6632.

I regard this as possibly the most undervalued of all SF eagles and, by all rights, it should be a five-figure coin.

This is the only CAC approved AU50 example with none higher.
