Not including the unique 1870-S, only four three dollar gold pieces were made at the San Francisco mint. The 1857-S is the second most available of these after the 1856-S but it is a scarce issue with just 14,000 struck and very limited availability in AU55 and higher.
This untoned example shows a good degree of luster and is very lightly worn with no marks of note. It is well struck with just a touch of weakness at the centers but a sharp date and mintmark. The eye appeal is well above average for the date.

For all intents and purposes, this date is not available finer than this and I have seen some much inferior 1857-S threes in AU58 holders sell for $10,000-12,000.
CAC has approved three in this grade with three finer.
