The 1875 quarter eagle is a famous issue due to its tiny mintage of 400 coins, which is the second lowest figure for any regular issue of this type after the 1854-S. Around 60-70 are known with most in the AU55 to MS60 range. This is an issue which didn’t appear to see much circulation as contemporary collectors were probably aware of its rarity shortly after it was produced.
As with all known examples, this piece is prooflike but it is clearly a business strike. And, as always, the surfaces are scuffy with the abrasions somewhat magnified by the reflectiveness of the fields. The color is a pale golden-green and the details are excellent.
The last PCGS AU55 example of this issue to sell at auction brought $14,100 as Heritage 6/14: 4768.
It is not often that collectors get a chance to own an American gold coin with a business strike mintage of just 400. Here is a chance to do just this!
