The 1923-D is the most common Mintmarked Saint Gaudens double eagle from the 1920′s. It is easily found in MS65 and only moderately scarce in MS66 but most pieces in these holders are overgraded. True Gems–those coins nice enough to be approved by CAC–probably represent less than 10% of those graded.

This lovely rose-gold Gem shows excellent luster and the surfaces are very clean. A small toning spot along Liberty’s outstretched left arm shows that this piece is original and undipped. This is a really attractive coin and it is perfect as a type example or for a date set of high quality Saints.

The last PCGS MS66 example with CAC approval to sell at auction realized $3,799 as Lot 304 in DLRC’s 11/14 online sale.

CAC has approved 214 in this grade with 12 finer.
