SOLD- $20.00 – 1906-S PCGS MS64+ CAC
Serial Number 9051.64+/25038332
PCGS Lookup Number 9051
This issue is popular as it was struck in San Francisco during the year which the famous earthquake hit this city. As a date, the 1906-S is common through MS63 and only moderately scarce in MS64 but it is extremely rare (and expensive) in MS65 and above.
At first glimpse, this coin looks like a Gem and it features wonderful rose and green-gold hues with choice surfaces and full cartwheel luster. There are a few small ticks in the fields and a reeding mark through the corner of the L in LIBERTY which narrowly remove it from a full MS65 grade but this is clearly a coin which merits its “plus” designation.
There have been four auction records for PCGS MS64+ 1906-S double eagles and the record price is $7,638 for Heritage 10/12: 6315. The only sales record for a PCGS MS65 is Stacks 2/08: 2473, which realized $21,850 over five years ago.
If you are a serious collector of Type Three Liberty Head double eagles, you will recognize the importance of this offering.
CAC has approved 17 examples in MS64 with one finer (MS65). Of the 17 coins in MS64, the number graded MS64+ appears to be two or three.
