The 1882-CC is the second least available CC double eagle from this decade, after the scarce 1885-CC. A total of 39,140 were produced and this date is seen most often in the EF40 to AU50 range. It is very hard to locate with natural color and surfaces.
This is a very high end coin for the grade with considerable luster and appealing medium green-gold color shading to reddish hues towards the borders. There are a few shallow scuffs in the fields as associated with the date and this piece doesn’t show the “washed-out” appearance often seen on EF45 CC double eagles, regardless of date.
The last EF45 example with CAC approval to sell at auction was ex Stacks Bowers 1/13: 12677, which was graded by NGC and it sold for $3,408. The present example, in my opinion, is considerably more choice.
CAC has approved 13 in this grade with 28 finer.
