The 1869 is one of a small group of dates (along with the 1868, 1870 and 1871) which are scarce and undervalued issues in the Philadelphia Type Two double eagle series. It is not often seen above AU53 to AU55 and very infrequently with original color and surfaces.
This piece is original and uncleaned with dark green-gold color on both sides. A few small abrasions can be seen including a cluster near the first star on the obverse; this is typical for the date and many 1869 double eagles are excessively marked. A small stain in the left obverse field between stars four and five barely merits mention.
There are no recent auction records for an AU53 example of this date. In 2012, two non-CAC NGC AU55′s sold for $3,220.
CAC has approved just this one coin in AU53; five have been approved higher than this.
