The 1856 is, along with the 1855, the most undervalued Type One double eagle from this Philadelphia mint. It is very scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and it is especially difficult to find with original color and choice surfaces.
This is one of the nicer AU55 1856 double eagles that I have offered for sale. It shows totally natural medium golden-orange color which is the exact “right” hue for this date. There is a good deal of luster present and the minimal wear is limited to the relief areas. A few small ticks in the left obverse field limit the grade but this piece is clearly high end for an AU55 and it wouldn’t look silly in an AU58 holder.
No PCGS AU55′s have sold at auction since March 2009. The last AU55 with CAC approval to cross the block was an NGC coin which brought $5,875 as Heritage 4/14: 6763.
CAC has approved 10 in this grade with only five finer.
