RARE UNCIRCULATED 1822 QUARTER
B-1, R-2. Normal Reverse.
As a variety, the 1822 Normal Reverse quarter is quite rare in higher grades. It is likely that no more than a dozen true Uncirculated pieces are known, the finest of which is a single PCGS MS67 which is a coin I’ve not seen but would pay to view it. The finest to sell in years was the PCGS MS64 offered as Pogue I: 1069.
This fresh example exhibits wonderful deep “coin silver” color with golden overtones on both sides. The luster is frosty and abundant while the strike is sharp. The obverse shows some friction in the fields and an old scrape above and to the right of the second 2 in the date. The reverse is choice and grades at least MS62 to MS63 on its own.
No PCGS MS61 1822 quarter has ever sold at auction. An unusual NGC MS61 designated as “PL” realized $7,475 as Heritage 7/11: 3480.
The other variety of 1822 quarter (the blundered reverse) is nearly unobtainable in higher grades which puts considerable date pressure on nice examples of the B-1 variety.
