The 1857-D is a scarcer date in the Dahlonega half eagle series although it gets no real price premium in grades below EF45.
This is a nice, evenly worn example with natural russet and green-gold color. Some dirt can be seen in the recesses on the reverse and some of what appears to be wear at the central obverse is, in fact, weakness of strike as is typical for the date.
The only VF25 1857-D half eagle to sell at auction in recent years was a non-CAC NGC coin which sold for $1,586 as Heritage 2014 ANA: 3893. A PCGS VF30 with CAC approval sold for $2,056 as Heritage 7/14: 4597 and it was very similar in appearance to the current example.
Dahlonega half eagles at this price point are becoming hard to locate, especially if they are CAC-quality.
CAC has approved one in this grade with nine finer.
