The 1854-O is the second most available No Motto half eagle from this mint after the 1844-O but it is harder to find in AU55 and higher grades than most people realize. Interestingly, it is often one of the last issues I find for collectors who are assembling date runs of New Orleans half eagles; not because it is “rare” but because it is less available than I typically anticipate (does that make any sense?)
This lightly worn example was struck in medium green-gold and it shows some lemon colors on both sides. It is well detailed and shows minor marks only. The reverse, on its own, grades AU58 and is choice.
The last AU55 example of an 1854-O half eagle to sell at auction was Heritage 10/11: 4919, slabbed by NGC, which sold for $1,955. Only one other AU55 has sold at auction since the Summer of 2009.
