The 1851 half eagle is common in all circulated grades and it is marginally scarce in MS60 to MS62. As with nearly all No Motto half eagles, it becomes rare in properly graded MS63 and above and Gems are extremely rare. The finest known is a PCGS MS65 (formerly graded as such by NGC) that was once in the Pittman collection.

This coin shows wild deep orange-gold and vibrant reddish colors on the obverse and reverse. Typically I would be skeptical with a gold coin with this degree of color and would feel that it was artificially produced by a heat source but this coin came with a small group of other coins all dated 1851 which were said to be found a few years ago and which resided in a church cornerstone.

If you like wild color on gold coons, take a look at this crazy 1851 half eagle!
